Letter From The Administration:

Wow, this past week was jam-packed. We started with an AMAZING Sophomore Shabbaton in Fair Lawn, NJ. The ruach, the excitement, the learning, the choir, the games, the fun-filled tisch - all of it was unbelievable. I had a blast getting to know all the incredible sophomores. On Thursday the entire school was priveleged to hear from Rabbi Dovid Orlofsky, who spoke to us about finding the strength to make it through lifes struggles, and finding a purpose in each situation. The girls were all moved by his stories, and many of them stayed to speak with him after he was done speaking formally. Mother-daughter tryouts are underway - the excitement and anticipation can be felt throughout the building. I cant wait for all the exciting activities we have planned for this fun month of Kislev, culminating with amazing programs throughout the week of Chanukah!!!

Have an amazing and meaningful Shabbos!!!

Dvar Torah

By Tal Meiri

As Jews, we are often forced to take a stand, and place our faith in ideologies which are less than “popular”. It is crucial to understand the source of our ability to do so. The answer to this mystery can be found in Parshat Toldot.

Before jumping into its main storyline, Toldot begins to list some background information concerning Rivka.

DvarTorahQuote.jpg picture by soundbytesphotos

"Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebecca, daughter of Betuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram, sister of Laban the Aramean, as a wife for himself.  (כה׃כ)

Though this is important information, it is nothing new. We already knew Rivka’s life story, and the Torah does not reiterate needlessly… what is the purpose of this being mentioned?

Rashi offers an answer, based on the Midrash Raba:

The seemingly unnecessary information is actually exposing Rivka’s righteousness. Though her home life was unfavorable, since she was the daughter and sister of wicked people, Rivka decided to set herself apart.

Rambam explains that “It is natural to be influenced, in sentiments and conduct, by one's neighbors and associates, and observe the customs of one's fellow citizens.” Despite this human tendency, however, Rivka became her own person- a righteous person.

Similarly, Rivka’s father-in-law, Avraham, demonstrated this quality when he stood against the rest of the world to believe in G-d. His willingness to stand apart for his beliefs was what earned him the name Ivri, an attribute upon which our nation was built.

And so, between Avraham and Rivka, it is easy to see how we, as Jews, have the capacity, and more importantly, the responsibility to stand up for the truth.

JFS

  By Shoshi Moradi

Chessed anyone? On Wednesday, November 11, ten very "busy" seniors walked into school with the opportunity to do an amazing chessed. Jewish Family Services needed some help, and so we jumped to do it. We arrived at JFS and quickly got down to it. There were four different food distribution stations - each with Tam Tams, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, pasta, tomato sauce, and much more. Half of us were running non-stop to fill the stations, while the other half was packing boxes. It was very rewarding to see full boxes of food pile up to be taken and distributed to those in need. Not only did we get to take part in this special chessed, but we enjoyed doing it, as well. We hope to take part in many more acts of chessed this year.

Attack in Fort Hill
By Miriam Klar

People tend to have a blurry idea of what happened in the Fort Hood shootings. I'll help clarify that day. Fort Hood, one of the largest army bases in the world is located in Killeen, Texas. On November 5th 2009, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasam, a 39-year-old psychiatrist attacked the very army base in which he was serving, shooting anyone he laid eyes on. Thirty people were injured, and another thirteen died.

The U.S. was going to send Hasam to Afghanistan later in the month. However, based on his reputation for being against the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, authorities suspect that he initiated the shooting as a means to find a way out of going on the mission. Previously, Hasam had spoken out against the war, but he never showed any signs of violence until he started his shooting expedition at Fort Hood.

Hasam himself was shot and captured, at which point he was brought to the hospital, fully alive. He was treated and is presently being held in custody.

This frighteningly and vicious act has shaken many Americans. President Obama spoke for the country, calling it “a horrific outburst of violence”. This attack is said to be one of the most devastating events in a long time and is the “worst mass shooting ever at a military base in the United States”.  This attack occurred directly down the road from another shooting of 1991 in which twenty-two people were killed and twenty were wounded.

Sophmore Shabbaton!!
Riki Silber

Sophomore Shabbaton: two weeks ago these words made me nervous, yet today they form the sweetest memories, still marinating in my mind. I packed, unpacked, and then packed again. I tried on every outfit, double checked that I put in my hair products, and practiced my smile for pre-Shabbos pictures. Two and a half hours of sleep was all I needed to last me the rest of the weekend.

Shabbos glazed over me on Friday as I entered into the shul, and I knew it would be a unique weekend. My grade welcomed Shabbos together, in true unity for the first time. I sang the entire night with eighty girls. Some were my best friends, many were close, and the rest were simply acquaintances. I can continually explain the warmth of the savory chicken, and additional descriptions along these lines, but I won’t waste my breath – or the stamina of my fingers, for this matter – writing out schedules and menus. After all, I believe you get the point.

Our “achdut” lasted the rest of Shabbos and only built in strength toward Saturday night, even spreading itself into the tenth grade hallway on Monday. As a girl from 207 dropped off her change for privilege sale the other day, I as well as a number of others from 211, 205 and 209, helped clean up. This was the moment I knew that we finally did it. We finally became a grade.
