As we head to the last few weeks of school, things here at Bruriah seem to be picking up speed. From the exciting student- faculty basketball game on Lag B’omer and the informative presentation about Chevron (in anticipation of this week’s Shabbat Chevron in Elizabeth), to Senior luncheon, Father-Daughter Learn-in, 10th grade rafting, and G.O. campaigning and elections, this week has been a flurry of activity. Congratulations to all the winners. And Kol-Ha-kavod to all the candidates for your willingness to step up and make a difference. Sefer Bamidbar is called Chumash Ha-pekudim (Numbers), presumably because it begins with the census of Bnei Yisrael in the midbar. But with even a cursory perusal of the sefer, one sees that Bamidbar contains many, many other topics. Perhaps the “counting” that Chazal were referring to was not just the literal number of Bnei Yisrael but additionally the message that we need to stand up and be counted. Pekudim has the same shoresh as ‘tafkid’ meaning job or maybe even ‘calling’. Each of us has a ‘tafkid-calling’ in life. We probably have a ‘number’ of ‘tafkidim’ at different times of our lives. So, whether you’re on G.O. or not, each of us can step up and make a difference. Have a great Shabbos. Rabbi Oratz Principal |
